Google: officially a verb (Editors Weblog)

“That feisty search engine which has caused a ruckus with several publishers has integrated itself even deeper into the fabric of society. Merriam-Webster Inc., publisher of the well-known collegiate English language dictionary, has announced that it will include "Google" and "Googling" in its 11th edition.

But despite the supposedly good news, all is not well in Googleland. In the same way that publishers think that Google is infringing upon their brand name, Google thinks that it could lose its own brand name if it becomes too generalized.

As the company noted last year, "There is a risk that the word `Google' could become so commonly used that it becomes synonymous with the word `search.' We could lose protection for this trademark, which could result in other people using the word `Google' to refer to their own products.''
